VET Student Loans

Businesses are always on the lookout for great managers; this means that Nationally Recognised Diplomas are essential for anyone wanting to work in management. For some people however, paying course fees upfront often presents a barrier to attaining the skills and qualifications needed to succeed.

Vet Student Loans is Commonwealth Government program allows you (if you are eligible) to access loans to pay for all or part of approved courses that:
- have a high national priority
- meet industry needs
- contribute to addressing skills shortages
- lead to employment outcomes.

The VET Student Loans program is an Australian Government loan program that helps eligible students enrolled in approved courses at approved course providers pay their tuition fees.
If you are an eligible student the Department of Education and Training (the department) may approve your VET Student Loan for an approved course through an approved provider
Just Careers Training is an approved provider and its Diploma level qualifications are approved courses!
The department will pay your loan directly to Just Careers Training. The rules of the loans state that you will be responsible for any gap amount in the tuition fees, which are not covered by the loan.
Just Careers Training is proud to offer our approved courses with no gap payment required.
You will owe a debt to the Australian Government for the loan, which will be managed by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO)
You can either:
- repay all your tuition loan fees (up to the loan cap limit) when your income reaches the repayment threshold (this refers to how much you earn)
- pay some of your tuition loan fees upfront and repay the balance when your income reaches the repayment threshold.
Eligibility to access this loan is not affected by your current employment status of if you are on any benefits or entitlements, however other eligibility criteria does apply (see the next tab)
It is important to note that VET Student Loans assistance is a loan from the Commonwealth and that there is a loan fee of 20%.
The loan will remain as a personal debt obligation until it is repaid to the Commonwealth.
The loan may affect (by reducing) your take-home (after-tax) wage or salary (once you have reached the payment threshold) until the debt is repaid, and may affect your borrowing capacity until the debt is repaid to the Commonwealth.
Students are required to repay this loan through the taxation system once they earn $54,869 (this is the threshold for 2016/2017 income year and changes every year).

These courses are currently on the list of courses approved by the Commonwealth Government for the VET Student Loans.
To undertake one or more of our courses using the VET Student Loan you will need to meet the Eligibility Requirements (for a VET Student Loan) as well as the VET Student Loans Student Entry procedure (for the course of your choice).
The VET Student Loans Student Entry procedure is in place to ensure that you have the ability to undertake and complete your chosen course.

To receive a VET Student Loan, you must:
- be an eligible student – see further information about eligibility below
- be studying an approved course (Diploma Courses at Just Careers Training are approved courses)
- be studying with an approved course provider (Just Careers Training is an approved provider)
- apply to the government using the approved form, and (Just Careers Training will provide you with this form)
- confirm your engagement and progression to continue to access the loan throughout your course. (the government department will want to know about your progress)
To be an eligible student you must meet ALL of these criteria – further detailed below.
You must be:
- an Australian citizen, or
- a qualifying New Zealand citizen, or
- a permanent humanitarian visa holder, who is usually resident in Australia. AND
- Your FEE-HELP balance (the amount of your FEE-HELP limit you have left) is more than $0 (this refers to how much you have borrowed for courses in the past); AND
- You are enrolled with an approved course provider in an approved course and have enrolled in accordance with the application requirements;AND
- You are studying the approved course primarily at a campus in Australia (this includes online and Print Correspondence options);AND
- You have been assessed by your Our Enrolment Manager as academically suited to undertake the approved course on the basis of either:
Your application will require:
- That you have a Tax File Number (TFN) or you meet the Tax File Number (TFN) requirements.
- You have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) or are otherwise exempt.
- You have given the required documents to your approved course provider and submitted the loan application form by the first census day no less than two business days after enrolling.
UNDER 18
There are no age restrictions to apply for a VET Student Loan. For students who are under 18, your parent or guardian must co-sign your loan request. Your parent or guardian will not be responsible for making loan repayments and it will not affect their credit rating. You will begin making repayments once your income reaches the minimum payment threshold.
a qualifying New Zealand citizen is a New Zealand citizen who meets all of the following:
- holds a special visa category, such as the New Zealand Special Category Visa (SCV);
- has been usually resident in Australia for at least 10 years;
- was a dependent child when he or she was first usually resident in Australia;
- has been in Australia for periods totalling 8 years during the previous 10 years; and
- has been in Australia for periods totalling 18 months during the previous 2 years.
As well as meeting the eligibility requirements set out by the government for a VET Student Loan, you will also need to meet and follow the Just Careers Training Student Entry Procedure. This is to ensure that:

You have been assessed by our Enrolment Officer as academically suited to undertake the approved course on the basis of either:
- providing your Australian Year 12 Certificate; OR
- providing evidence of successful completion of an Australian Qualifications Framework Certificate IV or higher qualification (where the language of instruction is English); OR
- displaying competence at Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy through an approved Language, Literacy and Numeracy test.
- In addition, Our Enrolment Manager must reasonably believe you show competence (ability) in completing the course.
Application and Enrolment into one or more of our courses must be completed prior to the commencement date of the course. (See Fee Schedules and Census Dates tab below)
If you meet our Student Entry Requirements and your application is accepted by our enrolment officer you will receive formal advice from Just Careers Training in the form of a welcome letter or email.
Enrolment in a VET Student Loan approved course with Just Careers Training (Entry Procedure)In order to apply for a VET Student Loan approved course you will need to:
- complete the electronic application form available on our website , AND
- Provide evidence that you have completed year 12 or a Certificate IV or above qualification in English OR
- Demonstrate that you are otherwise able to undertake your chosen course (this may be done by undertaking a Language, Literacy and Numeracy Assessment).
If you have not completed year 12 and / or a Certificate IV or above qualification in English
You will be required to undertake an assessment of your English Language, Literacy and Numeracy to ensure that you will be able to successfully complete the course.
This assessment may be completed at one of our training centres or online. You can arrange for this assessment in your application form.
Where you are required to undertake the assessment and choose to undertake the assessment online, then this will be followed up by an interview (by phone or at one of our sites) with our Enrolment Officer.
For our Diploma level courses, competence at exit level 3 in both English and maths is required. You will be informed immediately of your results after completing each assessment.
If your results do not confirm an exit level 3, you may make another attempt to complete the assessments. We will contact you to arrange for your second attempt. If the results are not at the required level after the second attempt, our Enrolment Officer will contact you to discuss alternative study pathways.
If you have completed Year 12 and/or a Certificate IV (or higher)We can assist you in obtaining the required evidence. You may request this assistance in your application form.

What is a Census Date?
The Census Date is the date on which a payment for a Unit of Study is required and/or the fee paid for the Unit of Study becomes nonrefundable. You may make this payment or you may have this fee (or part of this fee) paid for using VET Student Loans.
How do I read these tables?
Simple! The start date is the date before which you must be enrolled and have already arranged for your fees. This is also the date you will commence your course.
If you are learning at one of our training centres then this is the first day of your course. If you are undertaking your course by distance education (online or print by mail) then this is the day that you access your course materials.
You may pay the fee(s) applicable yourself or you may arrange for the fees to be paid fully or in part using VET Student Loans (if eligible and approved). You may also pay part of the fee(s) yourself and obtain a loan for the remainder of the fees.
The first table (TABLE 1) summarises the overall fees, start dates and duration for each of our programs. Detailed information for each of our Diploma Programs can be found in the tables below (TABLES 2, 3 and 4).

Fee and Census Date Information
- If you withdraw (in accordance with our Policy) before the Census Date for a Unit of Study (UOS) then you will NOT incur a debt for that Unit of Study (UOS).
- If you withdraw after the Census Date then you will have incurred a debt to the Commonwealth Government.
You will be sent an Invoice Notice 14 days before each census day, indicating your fees and census dates. Your debt is incurred on the day after the census day.
After a census day has passed, Just Careers Training will also send you a Commonwealth Assistance Notice (CAN) for that Unit of Study. The CAN will provide you with information about your debt, including the loan fee if applicable. If you believe your CAN is incorrect, you should contact your college immediately.

- Meet and follow our Student entry procedure. This is our procedure to ensure that you are academically suited to undertake a course. (see information in the next tab)
- Complete the Request for a VET Student Loan eCAF
The Request for a VET Student Loan eCAF is the online system for students to request a VET Student Loan. It provides you with a secure and easily accessible way to complete application forms for VET Student loans. You must also read the VET STUDENT LOANS STUDENT INFORMATION BOOKLET 2017 before submitting ‘REQUEST FOR VET STUDENT LOAN ECAF’.
When you sign and submit your ‘REQUEST FOR VET STUDENT LOAN ECAF’, you declare that you have read this booklet and that you are aware of your obligations under the VET Student Loans program.
Our specially designed application form (found by hitting the Apply Now button) will help you in determining if you are eligible for a VET Student Loan. This application is only the first stage and in no way does it oblige you to enrol into one of our programs.
In addition, all Units of Study have a Census date, this is a date before which you may withdraw from a course without incurring a debt to the Commonwealth Government. (see Fee Schedules and Census Dates tab below)
